'The Psychoanalyst’s Toolbox' by Carlos Tabbia

Is psychoanalysis possible in the Islamic Republic of Iran? This is the question that Gohar Homayounpour poses to herself, and to us, at the beginning of this memoir of displacement, nostalgia, love, and pain. Twenty years after leaving her country, Homayounpour, an Iranian, Western-trained psychoanalyst, returns to Tehran to establish a psychoanalytic practice. When an American colleague exclaims, “I do not think that Iranians can free-associate!” Homayounpour responds that in her opinion Iranians do nothing but. Iranian culture, she says, revolves around stories. Why wouldn't Freud's methods work, given Iranians' need to talk?

Thus begins a fascinating narrative of interlocking stories that resembles—more than a little—a psychoanalytic session. Homayounpour recounts the pleasure and pain of returning to her motherland, her passion for the work of Milan Kundera, her complex relationship with Kundera's Iranian translator (her father), and her own and other Iranians' anxieties of influence and disobedience. Woven throughout the narrative are glimpses of her sometimes frustrating, always candid, sessions with patients. Ms. N, a famous artist, dreams of abandonment and sits in the analyst's chair rather than on the analysand's couch; a young chador-clad woman expresses shame because she has lost her virginity; an eloquently suicidal young man cannot kill himself.

As a psychoanalyst, Homayounpour knows that behind every story told is another story that remains untold. 

 connects the stories, spoken and unspoken, that ordinary Iranians tell about their lives before their hour is up.

¿Es posible practicar el psicoanálisis en la República Islámica de Irán?  Esta es la pregunta que la psicoanalista iraní Gohar Homayounpour se hace a sí misma -y a nosotros- al iniciar su libro sobre desalojamiento, nostalgia, amor y dolor. Veinte años después de haber dejado su país, Homayounpour, entrenada como psicoanalista en Occidente, regresa a Teherán para establecer su práctica psicoanalítica. Cuando es cuestionada por una colega estadounidense sobre la capacidad de los iranís para asociar libremente, Homayounpour simplemente responde que ellos no hacen otra cosa: la cultura iraní se desenvuelve alrededor de historias asociativas. Is there love without violence? Luce deLire puts the use (of private property) back into abuse (between intimate partners) and identifies toxic possessiveness and control among intimate partners as symptoms of capitalism. She argues that most of contemporary pop culture trains us to take toxicity as the paradigm of romantic love—a condition which finds its continuation in actual violence between intimate partners. Unlearning toxicity means to detox from pop culture. Drawing on ancient lesbian poet Sappho, she suggests an alternative, anti-capitalistic version of romantic love: the indeterminate sublime.

¿Existe el amor sin violencia? Luce deLire vincula el uso (de la propiedad privada) con el abuso (de poder en la pareja) y presenta la posesividad y el control en las relaciones de pareja como síntomas del capitalismo. Sostiene que la mayor parte de la cultura pop contemporánea nos entrena para aceptar la toxicidad como paradigma del amor romántico, una condición que puede desencadenar fácilmente en violencia explícita. Para desaprender la toxicidad hace falta desintoxicarse de la cultura pop. Siguiendo a la poeta lesbiana de la antigua Grecia Safo, propone una versión alternativa y anticapitalista del amor romántico: lo sublime indeterminado.

In this short essay, psychoanalyst Aneta Stojnić answers the questions “Why psychoanalysis? Why now?” Ultimately, she suggests that the use of psychoanalysis today in the hyperdeveloped, digitized “Global North” isn’t primarily to help individuals “wake up” to a precarious global reality, as one might expect. Rather, Stojnić argues that the space psychoanalysis opens can help individuals pause long enough in the midst of the tempest of simulated satisfactions to finally fall asleep, and from there, perhaps, dream.

Comprised of fragments of bible verse, narration of the author’s own analysis, Lacanian textual exegesis, and speculative theory, “In-Between the Law and Transgression” interrogates the relationship between desire, the (symbolic) law, ethics, and destiny in psychoanalysis. The piece draws on the author’s experience as an analysand and analyst-in-training, and formally experiments with a variety of modes of writing that comprise psychoanalytic discourse as a means to explore the themes and concerns at play.

Compuesto por fragmentos de versos bíblicos, la narración del análisis del autor, exégesis textual lacaniana y teoría especulativa, «Entre la ley y la transgresión», se pregunta por la relación entre el deseo, la ley (simbólica), la ética y el destino en la teoría psicoanalítica. In year two of the global recession triggered by the pandemic, central banks have continued to keep interest rates down while pouring money into the economy. The goal is to encourage borrowing and spending in order to drive up demand. In this essay, however, Franco Berardi argues that while in the 20th century such injections of money succeeded in stimulating economic recovery and expansion, present conditions undermine the ability of monetary policy to mobilize society in the same way. The social organism itself, aging and weary from decades of economic and political disappointment, has grown less receptive to the “monetary enunciations” on which an ever-increasingly financialized, deindustrialized economy depends. At the same time, the capitalist imperatives of endless expansion and profit-maximization have unleashed irrational processes—environmental, virological—uncontrollable by financial mechanisms or political will.

Ya en el segundo año de la crisis mundial que ha desencadenado la pandemia, los bancos centrales mantienen el tipo de interés bajo mientras siguen inyectando dinero en la economía. El objetivo es fomentar el endeudamiento y el gasto para impulsar la demanda. En este ensayo, Franco Berardi sostiene que, aunque en el siglo xx esas inyecciones de dinero lograron estimular la recuperación y la expansión económica, las condiciones actuales merman la capacidad de la política monetaria para movilizar la sociedad de la misma manera. This essay explains why we feel compelled to constantly check our social media accounts and still feel lonely even when we are perpetually connected with others online. It argues that it has something to do with the notion of social media as ethereal and phantasmagoria. This means that social media, like the ether, works as an intoxicant that can take us from this world to the otherworldly, the ethereal. Just like the ether, social media also functions as an anesthetic. As social media is filled with entertaining and enchanting posts, it can sooth and soften the ordinary pain of being human. Yet, going to social media is like going to a phantasmagoric performance in that we go there to have our feelings stimulated by what is on display. Indeed, social media makes us feel more. But simultaneously, we are distracted and disconnected from our own feelings. Hence, the loneliness remains etched to the very core of our being.

En este artículo, la autora explica por qué nos sentimos obligados a mirar constantemente nuestras redes sociales y por qué interactuar continuamente con gente en internet no evita que nos sintamos solos. Sostiene que tiene que ver con el carácter etéreo y fantasmagórico de las redes sociales que, como el éter, funcionan como un intoxicante que nos trasporta de este mundo a un mundo etéreo. Igual que el éter, las redes sociales funcionan también como un anestésico: llenas de publicaciones entretenidas e irresistibles, calman y suavizan el dolor de nuestra vida cotidiana.
